How to get the sweat smell out of sportswear
The T-shirt has just come out of the washing machine, but as soon as you start warming up, the familiar smell is back. This happens with sportswear more often than with ordinary clothes, and it is not your fault or the detergent's. The odour lives in the fibres themselves, and getting rid of it takes post-workout habits, not just washing.

Short answer
Odour comes from bacteria breaking down sweat, and synthetic sports fabrics hold on to it more than cotton. Do not leave wet kit in your bag: turn it inside out and air it straight away, or wash it the same day. Wash inside out, do not overload the drum, go easy on fabric softener and let items dry completely in the air. A stubborn smell can be tackled by soaking in cool water with vinegar. And to keep your kit from soaking up so much sweat, reduce underarm sweating with an antiperspirant.
Why sportswear smells stronger
Fresh sweat has almost no smell. Odour appears when bacteria on the skin and in the fabric break down its components. We cover this in detail in “Why does sweat smell, and how can you get rid of the odour?”.
The fabric matters too. In a 2014 study, 26 people handed in cotton and polyester T-shirts after an indoor cycling class. The polyester shirts smelled noticeably more intense and less pleasant, and certain bacteria, micrococci, grew better on the synthetic fabric. That is why technical sportswear, comfortable as it is during training, needs more careful care.
Straight after your workout
Time is what feeds odour most: warm, damp clothing in a closed bag is ideal for bacteria.
- Take your kit out of the bag as soon as possible, ideally right after the gym.
- If you cannot wash today, turn items inside out and hang them up to air rather than throwing them into the basket in a heap.
- Carry your kit in a separate mesh or fabric bag, not a sealed plastic one.
- Do not wear the same T-shirt for several workouts in a row without washing it.
How to wash sportswear
Start with the care label: the temperature and cycle set by the manufacturer matter more than any general advice. Then add a few simple rules.
- Wash items inside out: the inside is where most of the sweat soaks in.
- Do not overload the drum, so that water and detergent can pass through the fabric.
- Do not use more powder or gel than needed: the excess rinses out less well.
- Go easy on fabric softener: many sportswear makers advise against it because it leaves a coating on the fibres.
- You can pre-treat the underarms and collar with detergent and leave it for a few minutes before washing.
If the smell is still there after washing
A home method often suggested for stubborn odour is to soak the garment for 30–60 minutes in cool water with a little white vinegar, then wash as usual. Test it on an inconspicuous spot first, never mix vinegar with chlorine-based products, and skip this method if the label says not to soak.
Dry your kit completely, in the air, somewhere well ventilated. A damp item put away in the wardrobe will start to smell again. Hot tumble drying can damage elastic fibres, so check the label.
If the smell persists after several washes like this, the fabric has probably absorbed it deeply. Sometimes it is simpler to replace an old T-shirt than to keep rewashing it. We cover white and yellow marks in the underarm area in “Sweat stains on clothes: where yellow and white marks come from”.
How to keep your kit from soaking up sweat
The most saturated part of a sports T-shirt is the underarm. If there is less sweat there, the fabric absorbs less and odour builds up more slowly.
- Shower after training and dry off thoroughly before putting on clean clothes.
- Choose a loose cut and technical fabric for training, and cotton for the trip home.
- Apply antiperspirant the evening before rather than before your workout: in the morning it goes on less well over skin that is damp from warming up.
- If your body odour changes suddenly for no clear reason, talk to a doctor.
The bottom line: clean kit starts with dry underarms
Proper washing removes the odour that is already there. To have less of it, you need to reduce sweat where your kit soaks up the most.
OKEY is a fragrance-free underarm antiperspirant for women and men, so after a workout its scent does not mix with the smell of sweat and fabric. It comes in a 35 ml roll-on bottle. Apply a thin layer in the evening before bed to completely dry skin and wash off the residue in the morning, as the instructions say; you do not need to add anything before a morning workout. It costs 7990 ₸ and is available on Kaspi via the button below. If it does not suit you, the bottle can be returned within 14 days.
