Sweating at work: how to stop worrying about stains on your clothes

Raising your hand in a meeting, taking off your jacket, shaking hands with a new client: for many people these are small ordeals when they spend the whole day keeping an eye on their underarms. The good news is that most of the preparation can be done the evening before, not during the working day.

Short answer

At work, sweating is made worse by nerves, a stuffy office, the commute and heavy clothing. Apply antiperspirant to dry skin the evening before, wash off the residue in the morning, and choose breathable fabrics and garments on which marks show less. Keep a spare shirt at work. If sweat gets in the way of your work even when you are calm, discuss it with a doctor.

Why you sweat more at work

A working day brings several reasons to sweat at once: a commute on a crowded bus or in a hot car, moving between the street and the office, a heavy jacket or uniform, tense conversations. Each is minor on its own; together they leave visible marks by lunchtime.

Then there is self-monitoring: when you keep checking whether stains are showing, tension rises, and sweating rises with it. We explain how this loop works in “Sweating when nervous: why the body reacts to stress”.

Preparation starts the evening before

The morning before work is a poor time for antiperspirant: you are in a hurry, your skin is damp after the shower, and a few minutes later you need to get dressed. OKEY is applied in the evening before bed, in a thin layer to clean, completely dry skin, and left on overnight.

In the morning, simply wash off the residue with water and mild soap and get dressed. There is no need to carry the product with you or top it up during the day, so you will not have to look for somewhere private before a meeting.

Office clothes that hide marks

Your choice of fabric and colour does not reduce how much you sweat, but it strongly affects how visible it is.

  • Cotton and linen let air through better than dense synthetics.
  • Marks show less on fabric with a small pattern or stripes than on plain light grey or light blue.
  • A thin cotton undershirt beneath your shirt absorbs moisture and protects the outer layer.
  • A jacket or cardigan over your shirt hides the underarm area; in hot weather choose light, unlined styles.
  • A relaxed cut around the armholes leaves a layer of air between the fabric and your skin.

Before a meeting or presentation

If you know about an important meeting in advance, treat it as an event you can prepare for.

  • Apply antiperspirant the evening before, not on the morning of the meeting.
  • Keep a spare shirt in a garment bag at the office: you can change into it before the meeting if the day started with a hot commute.
  • Arrive a few minutes early to cool down after the journey, rinse your hands in cool water and have a drink of water.
  • If the meeting room is hot, ask for it to be aired or for the air conditioning to be switched on. It is an ordinary request.

If stains appear anyway

Do not rinse the mark with hot water or dry the shirt on a radiator: heat can set the stain. At home, treat the area before washing and then wash the garment as usual. We explain where white and yellow marks come from and how to remove them in “Sweat stains on clothes: where yellow and white marks come from”.

If marks keep appearing, check your evening technique: is the skin dry before you apply, is the layer thin, does it have time to dry? The most common reasons for a weak result are collected in “What to do if OKEY does not work the first time”.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if you sweat heavily even in calm, cool conditions, if sweat makes it hard to hold papers or shake hands, or if you have started avoiding meetings because of it. This may be hyperhidrosis, and it can be treated.

It is also worth seeing a doctor if the sweating started suddenly, gets worse at night, or comes with unexplained weight loss, fever or a racing heartbeat.
