Sweating at a wedding or celebration: how to get through the day without stains

A stuffy hall, dancing, formal clothes in heavy fabric, nerves before a toast and a long evening: at a wedding, toi or anniversary party several reasons to sweat come together at once. The good news is that almost all of it can be planned in advance, so you do not spend the evening running to the mirror.

Short answer

At a celebration, sweating is driven by a hot hall, dancing, nerves, alcohol, spicy dishes and tight synthetic clothing. Try your outfit on in advance and move around in it, and choose a loose cut and breathable fabrics. Apply antiperspirant the evening before to completely dry skin, and shave or wax a few days before that. Bring a spare shirt or blouse, drink water and take breaks in the fresh air.

Why you sweat more at a celebration

Several factors add up at a celebration. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) lists heat, spicy food, caffeine, alcohol and emotions such as anxiety, nervousness and stress among common sweating triggers. At a wedding or toi they often come together in one evening: a crowded hall, dancing, a long meal and important moments in front of the guests.

For heavy sweating, the NHS advises against tight clothes and synthetic fabrics such as nylon. Formal outfits, however, are often heavy, close-fitting and lined. We looked at why the body reacts to nerves this way in “Sweating when nervous: why the body reacts to stress”.

Your outfit: test it in advance, not on the day

The most unpleasant surprises usually come from clothes worn for the first time, so it is worth testing your outfit a few days ahead.

  • Wear the outfit at home for an hour: raise your arms, dance, sit down. You will see where the fabric sits against your underarms and where marks may appear.
  • Choose a loose cut around the underarms and breathable fabrics. Materials are compared in “Which fabrics to choose if you sweat a lot: cotton, linen, wool and synthetics”.
  • Damp marks usually show more on smooth, plain fabric such as satin than on patterned fabric. If the outfit is already chosen, a top layer helps: a jacket, wrap or blazer.
  • The AAD suggests underarm shields to protect clothing. If you decide to use them, try them on with the outfit in advance.

Preparation day by day

It is better to build antiperspirant into your preparation than to apply it at the last minute in the morning.

  • One to two weeks before. If you have not used the product before, try it in advance rather than for the first time the night before the event, so you know how your skin reacts.
  • A few days before. Plan underarm shaving or waxing ahead of time. The OKEY instructions say to wait up to 48 hours after hair removal in the application area before using it.
  • The evening before. The AAD and the International Hyperhidrosis Society (IHHS) advise applying antiperspirant at bedtime to dry skin. After a shower, wait until your underarms are completely dry and apply a thin layer.
  • The morning of the event. If you use OKEY, wash off the residue as the instructions say. After that you can apply your usual deodorant if you like.

What to bring

A small kit in your bag takes away half the worry: you know you can cope even if the evening turns out hot.

  • A spare shirt, blouse or T-shirt: the AAD advises carrying a spare set of clothes so you can change into something dry if needed.
  • Tissues or a handkerchief to blot your forehead and neck.
  • A bottle of water.
  • A hand fan: it makes it easier to cool down at the table in a stuffy hall.
  • A bag for damp clothes you have taken off.

During the celebration

Celebrations last a long time, and a few simple habits help you stay in control.

  • Between dances, step outside or into a cool corridor for a few minutes.
  • Drink water. The NHS and the AAD both name alcohol and spicy food as factors that can make sweating worse. More in “Coffee, spicy food and alcohol: what really makes you sweat more”.
  • Take off your jacket or blazer while you sit at the table and put it back on before you go out to the guests or the photographer.
  • If you have to give a toast or step into the middle of the hall, take a few slow breaths in and out beforehand. How to prepare for speaking in public is covered in “Sweating before a performance: how to prepare”.

If sweating bothers you beyond celebrations

Sweating from heat and nerves at a celebration is normal. But if you sweat heavily on a regular basis, in calm situations or at night, and it gets in the way of work and social life, the NHS advises seeing a doctor. Treatment options are described in “Hyperhidrosis: what treatment options are there?”.

The bottom line: a celebration without thinking about your underarms

An outfit tested in advance, a loose cut, spare clothes, water and breaks in the fresh air take care of a lot. And the most important thing you can do for your underarms is to prepare the evening before, not in the middle of the party.

OKEY is made for this: a fragrance-free underarm antiperspirant for women and men, so it does not compete with your perfume, in a 35 ml roll-on bottle. Following the instructions, it is applied in a thin layer to completely dry skin in the evening before bed, and the residue is washed off in the morning, so there is nothing to reapply during the celebration. You can buy OKEY on Kaspi for 7990 ₸, with the option to return the bottle within 14 days.
