Irritation, itching or burning from antiperspirant: causes and what to do
Stinging or itching after an antiperspirant is most often linked not to using it as such, but to the conditions: damp skin, recent shaving or too thick a layer.

Short answer
If you feel burning or itching, wash the product off with water, do not reapply it and let your skin recover. Next time, apply a thin layer in the evening to clean, completely dry, undamaged skin.
Common causes of irritation
Antiperspirants with aluminium salts are active on the skin, so the way you apply them affects how they feel as much as the formula itself. Most unpleasant reactions come down to a few recurring situations.
- The product was applied to damp skin, for example straight after a shower.
- Hair was removed recently and the skin has micro-injuries.
- The layer was too thick, or the product was applied several times in a row.
- There are cuts, scratches or inflammation on the skin.
- Fragrance and alcohol in some products, as well as friction from clothing, further irritate sensitive skin.
What to do straight away
If burning, itching or redness appears, wash the product off with cool water and mild soap, gently pat the skin dry with a towel and do not reapply the antiperspirant.
Until the skin has recovered, avoid other potentially irritating products in that area: scrubs, alcohol-based lotions, shaving. Choose loose clothing in natural fabrics to reduce friction.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if the reaction is strong, does not settle within a few days or gets worse, or if a rash, blisters, weeping, marked swelling or pain appear. Recurring irritation despite correct use is also worth discussing with a specialist.
It is best to resume use only once the skin has fully calmed down.
How to reduce the risk next time
The OKEY instructions describe the conditions under which the product is tolerated more comfortably. We have written in more detail about dry skin and the pause after hair removal in separate journal articles.
- Apply OKEY in the evening, before bed.
- The skin must be clean, completely dry and undamaged: wait 15–20 minutes after a shower.
- After hair removal, wait up to 48 hours.
- A thin layer is enough: 2–3 strokes of the roller.
- In the morning, wash off any residue with water and mild soap.
