How often should you apply antiperspirant?

Every day, twice a day or once a week? The answer depends on the product in your hand and how heavily you sweat. Here is what dermatologists advise and how to find a frequency that keeps you dry and your skin comfortable.

Short answer

A regular antiperspirant is designed for daily use: the International Hyperhidrosis Society (IHHS) advises applying it in the morning and before bed, and if only once a day, in the evening. For heavy sweating, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) describes a different routine: apply the product at bedtime until the sweating is under control (usually within a few weeks), then as needed, usually once or twice a week. Your product’s instructions are the main guide. Do not increase the frequency in the hope of a stronger effect.

Why there is no single rule for everyone

Frequency depends on two things: the type of product and how much you sweat. Regular shop-bought antiperspirants are designed for daily use. Products for heavy sweating, which usually contain a higher concentration of aluminium salts, are applied less often after the first weeks. We covered how such products differ in their ingredients in “Heavy sweating: choosing an antiperspirant by its ingredients”.

So the advice “apply it every day” fits one product and not another. Start with the instructions on the pack: the manufacturer states how often to apply that particular formula.

A regular antiperspirant: every day

For over-the-counter antiperspirants, the IHHS advises two applications a day: in the morning and again before bed. According to the society, this routine, and especially the bedtime application, has been shown in studies to give the most benefit.

  • If you apply it once a day, choose the evening rather than the morning, as the IHHS advises. “Why antiperspirant is applied at night” explains why night works better.
  • In the morning, apply the product only to completely dry skin: the IHHS warns that water or sweat on the skin causes irritation.
  • If a regular product is not coping even with daily use, that is a reason to switch to an antiperspirant for heavy sweating, not to apply more.

For heavy sweating: more often at first, then less

For heavy sweating, the AAD describes a two-stage routine. For prescription products with aluminium chloride, the IHHS advises the same: apply every evening until sweating decreases, and once the product has taken effect, use it less often.

  • Getting started. The product is applied to dry skin at bedtime and left to dry completely. This continues until the sweating is under control; according to the AAD, this usually happens within a few weeks.
  • Maintenance. After that, the antiperspirant is applied as needed, which according to the AAD is usually once or twice a week.
  • The gaps are chosen by how you feel: when sweating starts to come back, it is time to apply the product again.

How to find your own frequency

The easiest way is a short diary: note the evening you applied the product and how many days you stayed dry afterwards. After a couple of weeks you will see which interval works for you.

  • Do not apply more often in the hope of a stronger effect: more product does not mean drier skin, but it does irritate the skin sooner.
  • Plan around your week: before hot days, important events or workouts, it is convenient to schedule an application the evening before.
  • If your skin turns red, itches or burns, the AAD advises increasing the time between applications, trying a different form such as a gel, and making sure the skin is very dry. More in “Antiperspirant irritation and itching: causes and what to do”.
  • If the effect is weak after several applications, check your technique before the frequency. That is the subject of “What to do if OKEY does not work the first time”.

When to skip an application

Sometimes it is better to move an application to another evening than to stick to the schedule at any cost.

  • Your skin is damp after a shower or sweaty. “Why the skin must be completely dry” explains how to prepare it.
  • You have recently shaved or removed hair: for products with aluminium chloride, the IHHS advises waiting 24–48 hours. More in “Why you should wait up to 48 hours after hair removal”.
  • There are cuts, cracks, redness or irritation on the skin: wait until it recovers.

When to discuss frequency with a doctor

If a strong antiperspirant does not help even when applied according to the instructions, or irritates the skin at any frequency, see a dermatologist. A doctor will choose a product and routine or suggest other methods, covered in “Hyperhidrosis: what treatment options are there?”. Do not put off a visit if heavy sweating appeared suddenly, at night or all over the body.

The bottom line: the instructions set the frequency, not habit

A regular antiperspirant is applied every day; a product for heavy sweating follows the routine in its instructions: usually less often, but in the evening and on completely dry skin.

The OKEY instructions say: “For a reliable effect, it is sufficient to use OKEY 1–2 times a week or as needed.” Once a stable result is achieved, the frequency can be adjusted individually. The instructions advise against applying OKEY more often solely to intensify the result, and suggest starting with less frequent use if you have sensitive skin. We worked out how long a bottle lasts in “How long does a 35 ml bottle of OKEY last?”.

OKEY is a long-lasting, fragrance-free antiperspirant for women and men, in a 35 ml roll-on bottle. It suits every area prone to heavy sweating. Following the instructions, it is applied in a thin layer to clean, completely dry, undamaged skin in the evening before bed, and the residue is washed off in the morning.
